After more than a decade as superintendent and more than 30 years with the Golden Hills School Division, Bevan Daverne announced he will be retiring in August of 2023.
Bevan has successfully built a culture focused on prioritizing what is best for students. Serving as Superintendent of Golden Hills School Division since August 2011, Bevan has brought many initiatives and programs to the division.
“Looking back at these past three decades I have had the good fortune to work with so many amazing individuals in all areas of our school system. Those people have profoundly impacted me very positively – both personally and professionally,” said Daverne. “I have been delighted to see our division continue to improve and grow in so many ways and have a strong sense of pride in where we are today. I continue to be struck by the individuals working in Golden Hills, in the variety of roles they have, who give so much of themselves - constantly going above and beyond to support students and the teams they work with. I have been lucky to be able to be a part of the remarkable work our teachers and school administrators have accomplished and all they have done to improve achievement and support students in so many ways.”
Furthering the jurisdiction as a community connector and partner has been critical to Bevan’s leadership influence. Innovations in trades education, the development and growth of online learning academies, and targeted community and business partnerships focused on four new schools and four modernizations in the last seven years have aptly showcased the integration of the jurisdiction’s school communities with unique student learning opportunities as well as the aspirations of broader municipal and regional communities throughout the division.
As a result of his hard work and dedication to Golden Hills, Bevan was the recipient of the Alberta Excellence in School System Leadership Award and the Canadian Superintendent of the Year in 2022.
Bevan is highly regarded amongst his peers as a leader and mentor, he is known for his quick wit, engaging storytelling ability, and his sense of humour. Bevan’s presence will be missed throughout the division.
“Bevan will be sorely missed in Golden Hills School Division. Under his leadership, Golden Hills has grown to be one of the most respected school divisions in the province. He has fostered a culture of excellence and innovation, always focused on the best outcomes for our students. By choice, Bevan has been a leader of leaders, actively encouraging administrators and teachers to develop their own leadership skills, thereby strengthening our entire system at every level. A humble man, Bevan will always sincerely credit those around him for the success of Golden Hills, but it must be said that his leadership and guidance will have been instrumental in every success we celebrate today and into the future,” said Golden Hills School Division Board Chair Laurie Huntley. “As a Board, it has been a privilege to work alongside Bevan. There are no words that can adequately express our respect and gratitude for this man. We can only wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Trochu man sentenced for break and enter

Courthouse

A Trochu man has been sentenced to five months for break and enter and trafficking in stolen property.
Simon May, 33, appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, March 17. He pleaded guilty to a number of charges.
The court heard that on December 28, 2022, a break-and-enter occurred on a rural property near Huxley. Three Hills RCMP were also investigating the theft of a truck.
During the break-in the suspects took a Honda three-wheeler, assorted tools and a trail camera which had been placed inside the building by the owners.
Later, police received a call for services for a vehicle trespassing on an oilfield lease near Three Hills. The male suspect was confronted by workers and left. The description of the vehicle matched one that was previously reported stolen.
Workers then noticed another vehicle on the lease and a male riding a three-wheeler. It was later abandoned on the road and recovered by police.
Police also located the stolen truck abandoned at a rural property near Three Hills. Upon searching the vehicle, police located the trail cam.
The memory card was still intact and the video files showed the two male suspects committing the break-in.
May and Jesse Bulechowsky were arrested and charged.
The court also heard how, in August 2022, a trailer was stolen from a Golden Hills School Division compound. Observers in Three Hills witnessed a transaction in a parking lot and two vehicles drive away. When the vehicle with the trailer was stopped, the driver indicated he has just bought the trailer. May’s name was signed as a witness to the sale. He admitted to having possessed the trailer and was party to the sale to a third person. He also pleaded guilty to a number of breaches.
The court heard Mr. May has been dealing with a 10-year methamphetamine addiction, but has since completed a program while incarcerated.
Crown and defence agreed on a joint submission of five months, less pretrial custody. He was given credit for 150 days in jail prior to resolving the charges.

Investigation continues into RCMP officer involved shooting in Wheatland County

ASIRT

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate an incident of an officer-involved shooting in Wheatland County.
The Mail previously reported on Sunday, February 12, Airdrie Rural RCMP received a call from Calgary Police Service (CPS) to assist in locating a vehicle which had been driving erratically.
CPS received a call at approximately 1:56 p.m. from a family member of the affected person (AP) who notified CPS the AP had threatened suicide before leaving in a vehicle.
The AP was located travelling east from the City of Calgary on Highway 564 and was followed by CPS HAWCS (Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety) helicopter, which captured video of the AP’s vehicle travelling at very excessive speeds and crossing over into oncoming traffic, causing other motorists to take evasive action.
CPS engaged Airdrie Rural RCMP at approximately 2:15 p.m. and Airdrie Rural RCMP then attended the area. Due to the danger posed by the AP’s vehicle, RCMP decided to deploy a spike belt.
The spike belt brought the AP’s car to a stop on Highway 564, whereupon the AP got out of their car and ran at an RCMP officer with an item in their hand. The AP yelled threats at the RCMP officer while the officer retreated from them.
When the AP attempted to enter the RCMP vehicle, the officer fired his conductive energy weapon but failed to stop the AP. The AP then ran at the officer with the item still in their hand.
The officer discharged their firearm, striking the AP and causing them to fall to the ground and drop the item.
The interaction was captured by both HAWCS video as well as recording equipment in the officer’s vehicle.
The AP was treated at the scene and then transported to hospital where they remain receiving treatment.
ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officer. No additional information will be released.
