Spaghetti challenge kicks off Christmas campaign

    The Salvation Army kicked off their Christmas campaign with the 4th annual Spaghetti Eating Challenge at 6 p.m on November 4.
    This is just the start of a busy two months for The Salvation Army. Those looking for a way to stop themselves from feasting on leftover Halloween candy can donate it to The Salvation Army for filling sunshine bags. Each year 800 bags are filled and taken to seniors at the Sunshine and Hillview Lodges, the Continuing Care Unit and Drumheller Institution.
    November 20 will be the kick off for the Christmas kettles and will take place this year at the Dragons game.
    Volunteering on a kettle for two hours raises enough money to give a child a merrier Christmas. To volunteer to man a Christmas kettle contact Gunnar Mortenson at 403-823-9825.
    There will be barbecues on November 21 and December 12 at Canadian Tire from 12 p.m to 4 p.m.
    Those who wish to sign up for Christmas assistance are encouraged to register as soon as possible as appointments are being filled fast. Appointments are going to be held at The Salvation Army on Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24.

    The annual food drive will be held on Thursday November 26, starting at 6 p.m.
    “We have something fun we call the ‘0 for ettiquette for food donations. 1. Open-we do not accept any items that are not properly sealed. 2. Outdated-please check dates before donating food and 3. Own cooking, due to health regulations we don't accept any home made products such as jams etc,” said Salvation Army Lieutenant Rachel Sheils.
    Christmas hampers and toy distribution will be held on December 17 followed by the “Fill your Cart” Dragons game where people have a chance to win their groceries by running food items across the ice to be the first to fill the cart. The winner will keep all groceries in their cart and the total dollar amount of all groceries will be donated to The Salvation Army.
    There are many ways to help The Salvation Army. Volunteers are always needed for Christmas hampers, food drive, working the kettles and a variety of other tasks.
    Last year Christmas was merrier for 138 children who received toys. 107 hampers were also distributed with all trimmings for a holiday meal.

Site work on Badlands facility could start this fall

    It is very likely residents will see ground work beginning this fall on the future site of the Badlands Community Facility.
    This week the Town of Drumheller sent out a request for tenders for a site project to build up the base of where the facility will soon be erected.
    “Tenders have been called for the placement of pit run gravel to be placed on the site of the facility, which is John Anderson Park,” said Drumheller CAO Ray Romanetz.
     On Monday morning a group of perspective contractors toured the site.
    Romanetz explains the goal of the project will be to raise the site approximately 1.5 metres, about the same height as the existing dyke north of the park, to the 100 year flood level.
Romanetz says he expects it will be a quick turnover.
    “We have a really short tender close, and it is to close this coming Thursday, (November 5). We are hoping if we get suitable pricing in, we’ll be able to award it by Monday,” said Romantez.
    “The idea is we get the pit run in place this fall so that when we tender this project--probably in mid-February--the soil will be in place and it won’t delay the construction project.”
    The funds for the site work and pit run will be taken from the already approved budget for the Badlands Community Facility.

Drumheller All Star roster named

    While many in Calgary and Southern Alberta fondly remember in 1989 the Calgary Flames taking it to the Habs for the Stanley Cup. Paul Richard kind of remembers it differently.
    After all, what does a guy named Richard do growing up in eastern Canada? Playing shinny there may have been a few “Rocket” epitaphs thrown out. It would have been impossible to ignore the legacy of The Montreal Canadians. But it also was hard to ignore Game Six in the forum, the first time Les Habitants were beat out of championship at home.
    “You can imagine the family history, the name,” he laughs.
    In fact, Richard has a couple seats from the Montreal Forum taken out in 1996 after Canadians moved to their new home.
    You would think with this history, Richard might be bringing something extra to the Drumheller All Stars versus the Calgary Flames Alumni next Wednesday at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. You would be wrong.
    Kidding aside, “I am a community guy first and a hockey guy. I love the game,” said Richard. “May the best team win.”
    Richard is on the Drumheller All Stars line going into the Wednesday's, November 11 match. The roster filled up in short order by area hockey fans ready to take on the Flames.
    For Richard it is all about the community, and sees the value of the Badlands Community Facility.
    The game is in benefit of the community facility. Other names lined up include    Taylor Colberg and former Drumheller Dragon Trent Colberg, Casey Grayson, Jamie Worman, Rod Knelsen, Eric Hodgeson, Lenny Koch, Blair Christianson Darren Toffan, James Stefanishion, Gary Chambers, Den Olsen, Shane Straub, Sheldon Straub, Tony Pliva, Ryan Colberg, Brian Olsen, Paul Richard, Wes Chung, and Joe Castonguay.
    Gary Chambers comes at the game from a bit different background. He would have been in grade school when he sat in his parent’s basement wearing his Joe Nieuwendyk jersey watching the Flames win the cup. He is excited to play against the legends he grew up watching.
    “I grew up cheering for the Flames and watching the Flames and when a lot of these players were playing was during the cup run, so they were my idols at the time,” said Chambers.
    He also says the game is for a good cause.
    “I am a strong supporter of the community centre, the town needs it to grow,” he said. “It is a neat fundraiser and I like the energy of the event to kick off the fundraising.”
    When surveying the list of players on the Drumheller team, Rod Knelsen, part owner of The Drumheller Dragons is worried he may be one of the most senior players on the squad.
    As for his hockey affiliation his roots go back to the Broad Street Bullies, and he will be wearing number 16 in honour of his idol Bobby Clarke.
    “This is something a person doesn’t get to do every day. Obviously I am really excited to play against some of those guys ,” said Knelsen.
    “The Badlands Community Facility is obviously going to be huge for the community and something the community needs and I am excited to be part of this.”
    There are tickets available at the Sports Room Source for Sports, Chinook Credit Union and ATB in Drumheller, for the game coming up on November 11 at the Drumheller Memorial Arena.
