Catholic school passes first hurdle on narrow vote

st-as.jpgCouncil gives green light to zoning change

St. Anthony's proposed new K-12 school passed another hurdle at Town Council on Tuesday, September 2.
Councillors passed the re-zoning application from Christ the Redeemer School Division by a narrow 4-3 margin, allowing the development to proceed.
The school division needed the application to receive Council approval or the school could not be built on the 12 acre site on North Dinosaur Trail.
The present St. Anthony's School's four acre site in east Drumheller is 50 years old and does not provide room needed for present and projected student enrollments.

Election date set for October 14

Two weeks of anticipation ended on Sunday, as Prime Minister Harper asked the Governor General to dissolve parliament, signaling a fall election.
The date of October 14 has been set for the next federal election and already in the Crowfoot constituency, the candidates from three major parties are lining up to be counted.
Kevin Sorenson, of the Conservative Party of Canada has represented the district since 2000. In the 2006 general election he won with more than 82 per cent of the popular vote. He says they are ready for an election.

Census numbers come up short

Over the last five years, the evidence of growth in Drumheller has been everywhere, from industrial growth to residential.

It just didn’t play out in the numbers.
The Town of Drumheller released the results of its census taken last spring.
The count was undertaken to give a more accurate reflection of the population of the valley, with hopes of a boost in the numbers compared to the 2006 federal census. Instead they saw a drop… a 399 drop.
