Hedgerows burned near airport

hedgerow

A controlled burn by the landowner Tuesday, November 3, around 8:30 a.m., just south of the Drumheller Airport, raised the attention of the public who in turn called The Drumheller Mail looking for answers.
During the 1930’s, hedgerows were commonly used in order to control soil and water losses.  Hedgerows have received worldwide recognition and this technology has been applied in many areas of the world.
Due to larger machinery used in today’s modern farming practices, little disturbance to the soil is done and the hedgerows are no longer needed. The hedgerows are pushed into piles and usually disposed of by a controlled burn.
