Administrator appointed for Village of Morrin

Morrin Sign

The remaining one Morrin Village Councillor is no longer serving as Municipal Affairs has appointed an administrator to oversee the operation of the village.
“Right now, two of the three Village of Morrin councillors have resigned leaving council with no quorum, and therefore, the Village is unable to conduct business or hold regular council meetings,” said Municipal affair press secretary Justin Marshall. “Minister Allard has appointed Harold Johnsrude as a contracted Official Administrator to assume the powers and duties of the Village of Morrin council. He will be working closely with the village’s Chief Administrative Officer to ensure village operations continue.”
There has been turmoil in the village office, which culminated with the resignation of former Mayor Howard Helton and Councillor Melissa Wilton. M’liss Edwards was appointed mayor at the October 28 organizational meeting, previous to Wilton’s final resignation.
With these changes, Edwards is no longer serving on council.
“With the appointment of Mr. Harold Johnsrude, the remaining councillor is no longer in their role. We thank the councillors for their public service. Regular meetings will continue as scheduled with the Official Administrator being in the role of village council,” said Marshall.
Edwards is disappointed with the decision.
“I am appealing because I don’t feel it is fair that I should be bumped off when I didn’t resign,” said Edwards. “I am not satisfied with the dismissal.”
She is unsure what her avenue is to appeal the decision but is planning to write Minister Allard.
Marshall says Mr. Johnsrude has extensive knowledge and experience in local government, and will work to ensure the community remains healthy and sustainable into the future. He has been appointed to serve until December 17, 2021, or until a council quorum has been restored.
“On December 4, 2020, a letter from Minister Allard was mailed to all village residents to update them on the situation. There will be a December council meeting.”

Virtual town hall held for renaming new Delia school

Prairie Land School Division (PLSD) held a virtual town hall meeting Tuesday, December 8, to discuss a possible renaming of the new school in Delia following online opposition to one of the suggested names.
Construction on the new kindergarten to Grade 12 school began in September of this year following an outpouring of community support and fundraising.
Shandele Battle Ward 4, Subdivision 2 (Delia) trustee for PLSD told the Mail, “Although there is no formal protocol for naming or renaming a school in board policy, it was felt community input was required as a result of a desire from the public to share their thoughts.”
One of the names suggested for the new school was Ray Martin or R.J. Martin after the former Alberta NDP leader. Martin was born and raised in Delia, attending Delia School from Grade 1 through graduation, and his connection to the community, as well as his dedication to education and “his life’s body of work” were motivators behind the suggestion.
However, some residents shared their opposition to Martin’s name being considered for the new Delia school online. Following the community’s response, PLSD superintendent Cam McKeage issued a letter on Thursday, December 3 acknowledging the community and apologizing for any controversy the name suggestion may have caused.
“We completely misread the community and the passion that is held for the name of Delia School,” the letter stated. “In hindsight, a mistake was made and we are prepared to work towards rectifying it.”
Delia Community School, to honour the community’s involvement was one of the names suggested during the town hall meeting. Violet Barss School was another name suggestion, after the former Delia mayor and the first woman in Canada to govern a municipality.
Maintaining the name Delia School was also suggested during the meeting.
“The information and feedback gathered will be discussed at the next board meeting on Tuesday, December 15,” Battle said.
