Town of Drumheller issues fire advisory

In its capacity as Local Fire Authority, a fire advisory is now in effect for the Town of Drumheller.
Due to the current hot weather and existing dry conditions a heightened fire risk exists.
Please note the following:
Under this advisory
All existing fire permits are suspended.
No new fire permits will be issued until conditions improve.

Prohibited
Any burning without a valid fire permit is prohibited.
Consumer fireworks are not permitted.

Permitted
Campfires and fire pits at commercial campgrounds
Backyard residential firepits compliant with Fire Bylaw 04-07
Natural gas and propane fire pits that are CSA approved or ULC certified
Natural gas, propane, electric stoves, barbecues, and smokers that are CSA approved or ULC certified
Solid fueled barbecue appliances where the primary source of fuel consists of charcoal, briquettes, or wood
Catalytic or infrared style heaters that are CSA approved or ULC certified.

We are continually monitoring weather and ground conditions. There may be changes in the coming days if conditions remain unchanged or deteriorate and it is necessary in the public’s interest to put a fire ban in place.
The above fire advisory takes effect on Tuesday, August 16 at 12 p.m. The above restrictions are in place until further notice.
This advisory is for all properties contained within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Drumheller.

Drumheller RCMP, partners execute search warrant in Morrin

On Friday, August 12, Drumheller RCMP, in partnership with Calgary Emergency Response Team, Calgary Police Dog Services, Lethbridge Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team and a representative of Canada Border Service Agency, executed a search warrant on a residence in Morrin, Alta. As a result of this search warrant, several stolen vehicles, as well as a large quantity of methamphetamine, psilocybin and a conductive energy weapon (taser), were seized.
Jeffery Morse, 41, and Tawny Markiewicz, 31, both residents of Morrin, have been charged with possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, two counts carrying a concealed weapon, four counts possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking, two counts fail to comply with release order, fail to comply with probation, alter/destroy/remove vehicle identification number, possession of weapon contrary to order, and importation of a prohibited weapon.
Morse has been remanded into custody and will appear in provincial court in Drumheller on these charges on Friday, August 19.
Markiewicz has been released from custody and will appear in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, September 9.

Drumheller Dragons prep for 2022-2023 campaign

The Drumheller Dragons are making some changes to be ready to be back on the ice for the 2022-2023 season.
In July, the Dragons announced the signing of 17-year-old Easton Adrian for the coming season.
Easton is a defenseman who previously played for the Battleford U18 AAA Stars. With seven goals and 38 assists in 38 games, he ranked fourth in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League for points as a defender and tied for first in assists for a defenseman. He is joining the team for the 2022-2023 season.
Last week the Dragons also announced some changes to the internal structure after operations. Kenton Levesque is promoted to associate coach for the coming season. A former Dragon himself, he also has spent five years with the organization in a coaching role and will be overseeing hockey operations with Head Coach and GM Kevin Hasselberg.
Rick Lobe has also been promoted to assistant general manager. He has spent time as a trainer and scout. His new responsibility role is the coaching staff with operations and player personnel decisions.
Barry Sawchuk will be leading all scouting and recruiting matters this season and has two new scouts. Garry Kimmen of Lethbridge will be monitoring Southern Alberta, and Scottie Orchison of Sallis will be monitoring Northern Alberta for the Dragons this season.
The Dragons open their exhibition season on Wednesday, August 31 hosting the Brooks Bandits. The regular season opens on Friday, September 16 on the road, versus the Canmore Eagles. The Dragons’ home opener is the following evening versus the Brooks Bandits.
