The young man who kidnapped a local boy on his way home from school last November has been sentenced to 15 months in closed custody followed by three years probation.
The 19-year-old man, who The Mail has chosen not to identify, appeared in provincial court on Friday, June 27 for sentencing. Earlier this year he pleaded guilty to kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, assault with a weapon and a number of breaches of his release. He was to be sentenced in youth court for sexual crimes two days before the kidnapping event in November 2007.
The court heard how on November 14, the young man was left alone in his stepfather’s car in the Bashaw area. About three hours later in he appeared in Drumheller in the car. The man approached three boys between the ages of six and nine who were on their way to an after school program. Armed with a utility knife, the man ordered one young boy into the car. The boy refused. The man then grabbed another boy by the backpack and put him in the car. The third child grabbed the man in an attempt to stop him, and was struck. The boy in the car climbed in the backseat, while the other two ran to separate homes for help.
ATCO Electric held an open house on Wednesday, June 18 at the Morrin Community Centre. The event was a chance for the company to meet and mingle with the community. The team of Terry Beaupre, power line technician and team lead, service, and service point representative Jessica Veenhuis had a shocking demonstration about electricity safety. They described various scenarios and showed how easily they could become deadly if precautions are not taken. Beaupre said the electrified model set is used for elementary school students as a learning tool. Often it is the youngsters that go home and teach their parents about electricity safety.
Plans are underway for another big Canada Day in Drumheller.
The schedule has been set, with lots of food, fun and music celebrating this great country we live in.
“We are lucky to be living in a country that provides so many opportunities to its' people. We are able to explore so many different cultures right in our own country,” said Ray Telford the economic development officer for the town of Drumheller.
The theme for this year is “Cool to be Canadian,” and begins with the Kinsmen pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Riverside Value Drug Market.
Then comes the parade through downtown from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The floats will be formed up across from St. Anthony’s at 9 a.m. to be judged. Those with candy to give at the parade are asked not to throw it, as a safety measure.
The annual Canadian Tire Cruise in Car Show will be held from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be a smokie on a bun barbecue, at Drumheller Co-op, put on by Greentree Mall merchants, in conjunction with Drumheller Palliative Care, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Farmer’s Market will be open at the Drumheller Memorial Arena and the Aquaplex will be having a toonie public swim
from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.
