For many years, The Drumheller Mail has given municipalities within our readership area the opportunity to reflect on the challenges and successes of the previous year, and share goals and plans for the coming year with its ratepayers as part of our annual Year in Review series.
Included among the municipalities the Mail reached out to for the 2022 Year in Review series was the Village of Carbon.
“Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide you with the information you are requesting,” was the response the Mail received from Carbon Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Vanessa Van der Meer on Tuesday, November 29.
This was also corroborated by Mayor Bryan Peever when the Mail subsequently reached out to him for comment.

Members of the Drumheller RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) and General Duty members executed a search warrant at a residence in the 700 block of 4 Street SW at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 12 as a result of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking.
The search led to the discovery of various quantities of illicit drugs including suspected oxycodone, percocets, psilocybin (also known as magic mushrooms), cocaine, and marijuana.
“Drumheller RCMP members continue to focus on a variety of crime within our communities, including trafficking of drugs,” stated Staff Sergeant Rob Harms. “This operation is another example of our GIS Unit and General Duty members working together to ensure a safe community.”
In addition, a taser, a large amount of cash, and other property and evidence, were seized all of which are consistent and indicative of trafficking a Controlled Substance(s).
Two male suspects, both from the Drumheller Valley, were taken into custody during the operation and have since been released. RCMP continue to investigate this matter and charges are pending.
If you have any information regarding criminal activity in your neighbourhood, including the trafficking of drugs, please contact the Drumheller RCMP at 403.823.7590. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the "P3 Tips" app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.

Salvation Army happy with community support over Christmas

Every year it is like a controlled storm with many moving parts, and like every year before, The Salvation Army has met its goal of providing for the community during the Christmas season and beyond.
The Christmas season is always a busy time for The Salvation Army, and their goal is simple, if someone reaches out in need, they are able to support them.
The Kettle Campaign is an important initiative over the Christmas season that helps fund The Salvation Army's program throughout the year. Anticipating the greater need as both The Salvation Army and its clients are facing inflation, they increased their goal to $50,000.
Major Robert Burrell of The Salvation Army says they met their Kettle Campaign goal and raised $54,254. Their mail-in donation campaign fell a little bit short of their goal but they were still able to raise $47,248.
This year, The Salvation Army was able to help 109 families over the Christmas season with hampers.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation not only to all of the donors, who helped out this year, and they do every year," said Burrell.
Westergard Ford was the site of the annual toy drive, and through community donations, Burrell said The Salvation Army was able to supply all of their wish lists without having to buy toys.
Amanda Courtenay, Family and Community Services coordinator for The Salvation Army says the demand for help during the Christmas season was about the same as last year. She says while they are serving approximately the same number of clients, she says the faces have changed.
“We couldn’t do it without the volunteers, and how people support us all year, especially at Christmas time. The community is just awesome,” said Courtenay.
The Salvation Army itself received a sort of Christmas gift. Last year they were successful in securing a grant from Food Banks Alberta and a couple of days before they broke for the holiday, they received three new upright freezers. This will help them keep the food bank stocked with nutritious food for its clients.
Burrell says one of their goals is to honour the donors’ wishes.
“We try to be good stewards of every penny that comes through our door and we believe strongly in that. We want to make sure it is used wherever the donor wished it to be used,” said Burrell.
