Inmate sentenced for assault

Courthouse

A former inmate at the Drumheller Institution was sentenced to six months after pleading guilty to his part in a jail attack.
William Standingintheroad appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, January 13. He pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.
The court heard on March 26, 2022, Standingintheroad was observed on surveillance footage with other inmates using a jail-made stabbing instrument in an attack. The victim was stabbed in his head and shoulder areas.
Standingintheroad was serving a global sentence of four years which included charges of break and enter. Aggravating factors in the attack were that he used a weapon and the assault happened in an institutional setting.
The sentencing recommendation of six months came by way of a joint submission by the crown and defence, noting there were hurdles in the crown's case, with an uncooperative victim.
He was sentenced to six months in prison, but was given one month credit for 19 days of pre-trial custody.

Results from holiday impaired enforcement

DSC 0211

Drumheller RCMP launched an Alberta Checkstop Operation for the month of December 2022 as part of Public and Traffic Safety.
The operation involved several members and partner agencies establishing stationary checkstops and conducting roving patrols for the purpose of actively seeking out impaired drivers.
“Traffic and impaired driving enforcement is key to public safety,” stated Drumheller RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Rob Harms. “Although the results of this operation show that most motorists were compliant and not drinking and driving, the results also demonstrated that several drivers operate vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. The police operation is considered a success, and detection and enforcement of impaired drivers will continue.”
In addition to roving patrols, a total of eight checkstops were held throughout December where 336 vehicles and drivers were subject to alcohol screening.
A total of six drivers were removed from the road ways for impaired driving or related interventions - two drivers for impairment, two drivers for refusing to provide a breath sample, one driver received a warning, and one driver received a 24-hour suspension.
All drivers were subject to Immediate Roadside Sanctions including immediate suspension of their drivers licences. In addition, three traffic tickets were issued and a total of seven vehicles were towed and seized.
