It has been a long spring and summer for football fans but last week the senior Titans were back on the field beginning their training.
Because of the COVID -19 pandemic, spring training and the jamboree season were cancelled, disappointing players, coaches, and parents. There was an air of celebration last Wednesday, September 2 as they took to the field. As coach Ken Fournier notes, this will be a verydifferent season.
As many restrictions are still in place, he explains that currently, they are able to practice within their squad and play some six-man ball. It won’t be until the province moves into the next phase of their relaunch plan will they be able to begin playing against other teams.
He does note there has been significant planning to bring the sport back on the field.
“Football Canada has given us a Stage 4 clearance which means they think we have an appropriate plan in place to play games. Football Alberta has come up with a return to play program for community teams in the fall, and school divisions are now adopting similar rules to be able to return to the field,” said Fournier.
For Grade 12 player Chase Sattler, it has been a long time coming for him to get back on the field. He was selected this year to go to the ABC Border Bowl, to match up with top players from BC, but this was put on hold. He is just happy to be back on the field with his teammates.
Some good news for the Senior Titans is they had 30 preregistrations, significantly more interest than last season. There is also lots of room for more players to join up.
If they can get on the field this season they will be looking sharp in new uniforms. The Kinsmen Club of Drumheller sponsored their black uniforms, while the Enns
alumni, Conner, Aiden, and Colton, who have since graduated from the Titans and each spent time playing junior football, sponsored the white uniforms for the team.
