The Mayor of Carbon and one of its councillors have been censured following a special meeting.
The Village Council held a special meeting on Monday, February 6. According to the minutes, to be approved, at the February 21 meeting, Councillor Michelle Lomond brought forward a motion to censure Mayor Brian Peever for his action with a resident at the Village of Carbon Council meeting on Monday, January 16.
The Village of Carbon will provide a letter of reprimand stating Mayor Bryan Peever is on probation with the removal of the Mayor honorarium until the next Organizational Meeting, notes the minutes.
On top of his probation and the loss of his honorarium until the next organizational meeting, Mayor Peever was also directed to apologize for his actions at the February 21 meeting, and to apologize through publication in the Three Hills Capital Newspaper. It did not note how the advertisement would be paid for.
Later in the meeting, Councillor Lomond motioned that “Village of Carbon Council censure Deputy Mayor Brian McHugh for his actions with resident communication involving Council, pursuant to the Village of Carbon’s Code Of Conduct Bylaw 2018-806.”
McHugh was also put on probation until the next organizational meeting, but it did not note if he would lose his honorarium. He was directed by the council not to respond to emails on behalf of the Council without Council’s consent and when pecuniary interest is noted, he will excuse himself effective immediately.
Both motions were carried.

A team of five bowlers will be representing Drumheller at the Alberta Special Olympic Winter Games this coming week.
The 2023 Special Olympics Winter Games are on February 24-26 and are hosted by Strathcona County. Events include 5-pin bowling, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing and speed skating.
The team of Ken Smith, John Batarseh, Mike Cairns, Clayton Hamilton and Dan Tabor are heading to the games. Coach Sherrylyn Sapanlay says the team is excited to go.
While there are many more bowlers, these are the top players to qualify.
To prepare for the games, the team is practicing once a week and also goes to friendly tournaments to brush up on their skills. They were in Calgary for a Tournament on January 21 and after the games will be going to the Foothills Bowling Tournament on Saturday, March 18.
Sapanlay says they are hoping for some great results, but are preparing for some tough competition.
While the provincials are every three years, they did not qualify the last two times.
