Caregiver sentenced for fraud charges

A woman who worked in a senior residence in Drumheller pleaded guilty to one count of fraud for using of a resident’s bankcard.
Sheilla Abadiano, 36, appeared in provincial court in Drumheller facing four charges. She pleaded guilty to fraud under $5,000.
The court heard that Abadiano was employed as a caregiver at a Drumheller seniors’ lodge when between July 1 and September 10 she used a resident’s bankcard at various ATM's in Drumheller. The total funds taken were about $2,200 in six transactions.
She has no prior criminal record and when prompted she admitted to the crime.
The court heard how Abadiano, who was separated from her husband, and supporting three children overseas, has been in Drumheller for four years. Originally, she had been a caregiver for two elderly people, but both have since passed away. She worked both in nursing homes and as a cleaner.
Her father, also overseas, was facing grave health problems and Abadiano was dealing with significant financial stress. The victim had offered to help Abadiano but initially Abadiano turned down the offer. Later Abadiano took the bankcard without permission.
Since her arrest, her father has passed away.
Also since the incident, Abadiano has been suspended from her job and has not been able to work. She is moving to Calgary where she has arranged work and a new living situation.
Abadiano was given a suspended sentence and a one-year probation order. In that time she is to complete 60 hours of community service and make full restitution. The remaining charges were withdrawn.

  ••••Update, January 2, 2013 ••••

Bennett Richard Ray, son of Darby and Melissa Ray of Hanna, is Drumheller's official New Year's Baby, born 12:00:15 a.m., January 1, 2013. Congratulations! See more in Friday's inSide Drumheller.

To help compensate for a lifetime of being saddled with a birthday so close to Christmas, The Drumheller Mail is holding its annual New Year’s Baby Contest.
Parents, or those who may be nearing that title, who had been intimate roughly nine months ago may find they can bring home more than a new bundle of joy.
This year the prizes include over $1,100 in gift certificates, which include local restaurants and retail outlets, and other prizes. Fifty-nine businesses in and around Drumheller have contributed to the contest.
To be eligible for the contest the first boy or girl of the year must be the first born in the Drumheller Regional Health Complex after midnight of January 1, 2013. The attending physician must also specify the exact time.
If your new baby meets that criteria, submit a written statement to The Drumheller Mail no later than January 3. If there has been no winner at that time, the contest will continue until a winner is declared.

Ambulance transition said to be smooth sailing

The transition of operations from the Badlands Ambulance Society to Alberta Health Services is going smoothly and they are looking at it being complete this coming March.
inSide Drumheller reported in the October 5 edition that following an emergency meeting, Badlands Ambulance would be divesting its operation of ambulance service in Drumheller and area.
Then Chair of the Badlands Ambulance Services Society, Ben Armstrong expressed that budgetary restrictions were the main consideration in voting to end its operation of ambulance services. While the society announced they would part ways, they said they were committed to making sure there was no disruption of service during the transition.
Councillor Doug Stanford said they have been having meaningful meetings with Alberta Health Services to implement the transition and so far it is going very smoothly.
He explained at the meeting they brought in most former committee members at the meeting and were assured that in all likelihood there will be very little change.
“We are going to be holding another meeting in January and our date for transition is March 1,” said Stanford.
