Dickson Dam operators release water

Operators of the Dickson Dam have begun to release water into the Red Deer River.

After carefully watching the river levels, the Dickson Dam has decided to release a controlled amount of water.

The release is to make room in the reservoir in anticipation of spring runoff.

Residents will notice a slight increase in water levels over the weekend due to this increase.

“It’s not significant where people are going to be concerned or anything,” said Mayor Terry Yemen.

The dam itself was constructed and opened in 1983, creating the reservoir known to most as Glennifer Lake near Innisfail.

Four of Drumheller’s finest firefighters are planning to take a step, in fact, 1,204 steps to support firefighters who are battling cancer.

On Sunday, May 7, the team is participating in the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge, hosted by the Calgary Firefighters Benevolent Society. Its purpose is to provide assistance to firefighters and their families when they are in need.

Mitch, Merv and Kyle Smith, along with Duane Bolin will be participating. This means climbing the 1,204 steps up 775 vertical feet in their entire turnout gear. This is highest stairclimb in the world.

Those wishing to make a donation to support your local members, can go to Calgarystairclimb.com and click on the link “Show a firefighter support,” donate to a team, and enter Drumheller Fire and Rescue.
