Man arrested in Drumheller for 2010 Cranbrook double homicide

A man was arrested in Drumheller and charged with first degree murder over the weekend for a nearly decade old double homicide in Cranbook, BC, Global News and the Vancouver Sun reports.

Police arrested 30-year-old Sheldon Joseph Hunter in Drumheller in connection with the May 29, 2010 death of 43-year-old Leanne Laura MacFarlane, who was found dead after a shooting at a rural residence outside Cranbrook. Another man, Jeffrey Todd Taylor, 42, was found in critical condition and died a short time later. According to the Vancouver Sun, MacFarlane and Taylor died after being shot in a cabin they were renting.

Colin Raymond Correia, 41, was arrested in Edmonton on Saturday, June 9, followed by Hunter's arrest in Drumheller the following day.

The Vancouver Sun wrote that the men had a extensive criminal history, with Hunter being convicted in the past of assault, firearms offences, drug trafficking, possession of stolen property, uttering threats and escaping custody.

The men will be transported to Vancouver where they will appear in court on Wednesday, Global reports.


Grocery employee slashed with weapon in Hanna robbery and assault

A Hanna Freson Bros. employee was slashed with a weapon after a male suspect demanded money from the employee, police reported Sunday.

    Police say at approximately 8:00 am on Sunday, June 10 a white male approached the grocery store employee in the parking lot and asked to exchange a $20 bill and then left after the employee said she did not have any money. The male returned at approximately 4:45 pm and demanded money from the same employee. After she refused the suspect slashed at the employee’s face with an unknown weapon and neck causing non-life threatening injuries.

    The suspect is described as being in his 30s, having a buzz cut with brown hair, clean shaven, approximately 5’11”, stocky build, and wearing dark jeans and a black jacket.

    Information about this crime can be reported to Hanna RCMP at 403-854-3391 or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Tears shed as new cadet commander appointed

The pride and emotion of Drumheller Sea Cadet‘s Elizabeth Mundell was evident Sunday as she was named the corps’ new commanding officer at the organization’s annual ceremonial review on June 10. LCDR Robert Newtown officiated the change of command which saw Lt. Steve Proudler leave his position as commander. Dozens of students were honoured with awards for their achievements at the meeting, followed by a barbecue and meet and greet with high ranking officials from cadets organization.
