Pedestrian lights coming to Bridge Street

Construction work is underway on Bridge Street and when complete there will be a new pedestrian crossing at Grove Avenue.

The Mail reported in its June 29 edition that construction is beginning on Highway 9, north of the Gordon Taylor Bridge. This project includes replacing medians and then resurfacing the highway from the bridge to near Fountain Tire.

Drumheller CAO Darryl Drohomerski says the design of the road and medians will remain much the same and there is no change to how traffic is routed through the busy thoroughfare.

One change will be a new pedestrian crossing.

“The crosswalk will actually be signalized,” said Drohomerski. “Alberta Transportation looked at that, and the amount of traffic at that intersection, and felt that it did deserve to have lights at it.”

The crosswalk connects North Drumheller with businesses on the east side of the highway. This is particularly busy in the summer months with local foot traffic and visitors camping in the area.

The construction began on July 3 and is expected to last until August 24.

“There will be some traffic restrictions in the area so we ask that drivers are vigilant and to expect delays when commuting,” said director of infrastructure Armia Mikhaiel.

A local youth has been honoured with the prestigious Queen’s Golden Jubilee Citizenship medal on July 24.

Former Drumheller Valley Secondary School student Jess Francis was given the award in recognition of her volunteerism and leadership within their communities and schools in 2017. Each award includes a $5,000 cheque and congratulatory letters from the minister of culture and tourism and the lieutenant-governor.

Francis previously won the Loran Award scholarship worth $100,000 over four years in February 2017 for her academic and community success during high school. It is the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate award in Canada.

A selection committee chooses recipients of the Queen’s Jubilee citizenship award from the Alberta high school students who received the premier’s citizenship award that year.

“The awards recognize the many contributions that these dedicated young Albertans have made to date, while encouraging their ongoing development as community and artistic leaders,” said Alberta’s lieutenant-governor Louis E. Mitchell.

Update: Water fountain repairs to be completed in August

The Town of Drumheller has awarded the tender to repair the water supply and pipes of the Rotary Spray Park Fountain and hopes to have the work completed by August 10.

Advantage Reline is expected to begin the work on July 31, with work expected to involve excavation, pipe lining, and plumbing, followed by the standard procedures for water quality testing and obtaining the approval of Alberta Health Services. The pipes were found to be losing large amounts of water prior to closure.

"This is a complicated project and it has taken a while to get the correct skills and equipment needed to complete repairs," said director of infrastructure Armia Mikhaiel. "We thank the public for their patience and look forward to having the fountain available for everyone to enjoy."
