National emergency alert system tested today

alert

At 1:55 p.m. today, November 28, the national Alert Ready System was tested, sending an alert on television, radio and compatible electronic devices.

The national wireless public alerting system was launched earlier this year and the alerts will appear like a text message on compatible phones that are 4G LTE. It was sent through cell broadcast distribution.

This is a mobile technology that allows messages to be broadcast to wireless devices in a designated geographical area. This means if there is a local emergency, such as flooding, boil water advisories or weather warnings such as winds and tornadoes, devices in the area will be alerted.

The system underwent its first test in the spring of this year but had some issues. About 60 per cent of wireless users received an alert at that time.

To learn more about the national wireless public alerting system, or to check if your wireless device is compatible, go to www.alertready.ca.
