East Coulee School Museum receives grants

The East Coulee School Museum was successful in a grant application to continue work on the historical resource.
   The museum received a Community Facility Enhancement (CFEP) grant for $10,760 to replace two north facing windows. These two windows have rotted and are in need of replacement.
   Executive director Barb Steeves explains because the museum is a historic resource, the windows have to be replaced to match the original construction to maintain historical integrity. This includes using the same material and build style as it was originally constructed. Even if the glass breaks it has to be replaced with glass from the same time period.
   They hope to complete work on the project this season.
   The Museum was also the recipient of the Alberta Museum Association operational staffing grant. This is for $25,000 and goes toward staffing an executive director.

Michichi Creek boardwalk opens June 20

   People will soon be able to take a scenic walk along Michichi Creek when the interactive boardwalk opens on June 20.
   The kilometre-long boardwalk highlights the importance of the watershed with information on area flora and fauna, geology, biodiversity, and habitat with 11 interpretive signs.
   Starland County assistant agricultural fieldman, Dara Kudras, said work is continuing at the site but the boardwalk and signs look great, and the county is excited for the grand opening.
   A free barbecue and corn on the cob will be hosted by the Starland County Agricultural Service Board on Thursday, june 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Michichi Dam Campground and Recreation Area. The ribbon cutting will take place at noon, followed by the opening of the boardwalk to the public.

And the winners are... Celebration of Excellence 2019

The 2019 Celebration of Excellence honoured the exceptional contributions to the community in the business, tourism and volunteerism sectors as well as the contributions of students. The ceremony was held at the Badlands Community Facility on Thursday evening, June 13.

Gary Toft, longtime Salvation Army, Knights of Columbus and Ag Society volunteer was named the Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year. Donna Tessier was the runner up. He is presented the award by Rotary President Stacey Gallagher.

The winner of the Rotary Club’s Most Courteous Employee is Valley Bus Society driver Dan Ripper. The runner up was Linda Handy of The Town of Drumheller. He is presented the award by Rotary President Stacey Gallagher.

The Rotary Club’s Female Athlete of the Year was Camryn McDougald, left, and Male Athlete of the Year was Teagan Watson. They are presented the award by Rotary President Stacey Gallagher.

The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce’s Arts, Culture and Community Award recipient was Dry Canyon Collectables. Mike and Lynn Fabrick accept the award. Finalists include the Escape Room and Rosebud Theatre.

The Diversity Leadership Award was presented to the Drumheller Public Library. Accepting the award is library director Emily Hollingshead. Other finalists were Boston Pizza and MH Enterprises.

The Most Promising New Business Award winner was Citizen Yoga. Accepting the award is Calsea Freeman. Runner-ups include the Royal Den Of Hair Connoisseurs and Whispering Spirit Performance Horses.

The Faux Den was named the Small Business of the Year. Owners Tom and Amie Courtenay accept the award. Other finalists include Centre Street Insurance and TUGS Pop Culture and Sports.

The Large Business of the Year winner was Fountain Tire. Joanne Hodgson accepts the award from Chamber president Jeff Hall. Other finalists include Reality Bytes and Vintage Tap House.

The Business Professional of the year is Shelley Rymal. The other finalists were Amie Courtenay and Willow Brooks. She accepts the award from Chamber President Jeff Hall.

The Travel Drumheller Tourism Excellence award winner was The Last Chance Saloon. Finalists were the East Coulee School Museum and Rosebud Theatre.
