Making good on the bet made to Lloydminister’s Mayor Gerald Aalbers over which was the Most Rider Friendly Community, Drumheller Mayor Heather Colberg travelled to Lloydminister last week where she drove a street sweeper in a parade, learned about the city, and visited the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. She said the city has been hit hard by the downturn in oil and gas but the people were “so welcoming, considering what they’ve been through.”
After 16 years, the madness continues again this weekend with Motorcycle Madness.
The premier event celebrating hitting the open road on two wheels has enjoyed longevity in the valley, but that doesn’t preclude it from mixing it up to make it a little more interesting. The event goes this Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13.
“We have made our scavenger hunt this year even bigger,” said one of the organizers Connie Tremblay. “Our scavenger hunt starts at noon on Friday and we go until Saturday at 5 p.m. and we have thousands of dollars of different gifts.”
The action begins on Friday evening with it’s meet and greet at O’Shea’s and they head out for a steak run that concludes with dinner at Yavis, and then out to Top Rocker for entertainment.
On Saturday the action shifts to the Last Chance Saloon. They will have a breakfast buffet and the show and shine from 10 -11:30 a.m. This is a great chance for the community to see some of the best bikes from Drumheller and beyond.
After that riders can head out on a poker run, and continue with their scavenger hunt.
“That allows the biker to get out and visit all the businesses that are sponsoring us,” she said.
At 4 p.m., they are back at the Last Chance Saloon for bike games and the burn out pit, followed by supper and entertainment.
Throughout its event, the Motorcycle Madness will be raising funds for the Drumheller and District Humane Society.

Entrepreneurs thinking of starting a small business in downtown Drumheller are getting encouragement from Century 21 with the launch of their new micro business pilot program.
Business licence fees for this year will be waived for the owners of a micro business (one that makes less than $30,000/year in revenue) as long as they agree to stay open on weekend nights in until the September long weekend, handout town brochures and maps, and help with the downtown plaza when needed. The microbusinesses will rent space from existing retailers downtown for $200 per month for July and August to have their space.
Century 21’s Bob Sheddy says they wanted to create a downtown shopping experience for people after the daytime-hour businesses close.
“We wanted to create a model that provides entrepreneurs a prime location downtown for the prime 30 to 60 days of summer retail traffic,” Sheddy said.
