Downtown Drumheller was transformed into the fictional town of Summerville, Oklahoma for the ‘Ghostbusters 2020’ film production, which shot in the valley earlier this week.
The film, known officially under the false title ‘Rust City,’ and only confirmed by town officials as ‘GB20,’ is the upcoming fourth film in the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise. The film is set to star the likes of Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, and Paul Rudd and is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of the director of the first two Ghostbusters films.
“This is probably the biggest production here ever,” said town Economic Development Manager Sean Wallace, who has been the single municipal point of contact for the production.  While he and others have signed non-disclosure agreements prohibiting them from speaking about the film until after its release next year, he says the production crew staff probably number 150 and the economic spin-off for the town is “a real boon for the community,” both economically and publicity-wise.
“It absolutely can be measured. If they are staying here they have to eat three meals a day, are booking hotels, buying souvenirs.”
Crews started working downtown Drumheller last week to remove and replace signage along 3rd Avenue. Drum Wireless transformed into a U.S. post office, a doctor's office popped up on the corner of Centre Street, and there were a number of older-model cars parked in the street. Fans watched the production work along Centre Street and 3rd Avenue, which had been temporarily closed off to vehicle traffic, although foot traffic is still permitted.
Jason Nolan is a location scout for the production and said that in general Drumheller has an older charm that is easily suited to filming movies set in the past.
“It has a small town America, it’s kind of stuck in time,” he said. “There aren’t  many small towns like this left.”
While Sony has been tight-lipped about the film, Dan Akroyd was spotted with the film’s crews in Crossfield earlier this month, so the original cast from the 1984 film including Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver may be making appearances. The film entered production in July of this year and has been filming portions at different locations in Crossfield, Beiseker, and Calgary.
Shooting seemed to take place on Monday. Most of the equpment and signage downtown, as well as the crew vehicles were mostly gone by early Tuesday afternoon.
Ghostbusters 2020 is scheduled for a July release next year.

Greentree Mall not for sale, will undergo environmental assessments

The former Drumheller Co-op food store and adjoining mall on Highway 10 East will remain vacant with no major plans for demolition or attracting new tenants, as the building was not discussed at Westview Co-op’s annual meeting last week.

The mall, which saw its last tenants leave earlier this year, was closed after Westview Co-op decided the significant losses in operating the building was not sustainable.

Westview Co-op General Manager Dennis Laing says the building is currently not up for sale and the Co-op has not made a decision on whether to demolish the mall or find another option. He says the Co-op believes there are no buyers interested in purchasing the property.

“I don’t believe there is anyone out there who would be willing to pay what we would need for it, and to me the land underneath it is more valuable. We wouldn’t be able to part with the land,” he said.

Greentree Mall had operated at that location since the late 1970s but began seeing tenants leave and a decline in foot traffic. When the Drumheller Co-op closed in early 2017, the mall saw an exodus of store owners and the last ones left this spring. At the time, Westview Co-op said the mall was operating at a yearly loss of $500,000.

While no decision was made of what to do with the property at Westview’s annual general meeting, Laing says the Co-op will be having a hazardous material assessment on the building and a decision will be made once all environmental work has been completed.

Shed, fence damaged in late night smash and dash

Drumheller RCMP are investigating a smash and dash which left residents without a fence or garden shed.

At around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, a vehicle hopped the curb and drove through the backyard, smashing a fence and shed at 108 1 Street West, across the street near the World’s Largest Dinosaur. Kim Suntjens of Total Control Security says four individuals were in the red or burgundy coloured car but three of them fled on foot while the driver drove away.

Neighbour Wade Grimm says they nearly took out the corner of his house and a deck when they drove through the yard. He guessed from the tire tracks that the car hit the fence, pulled a u-turn, and drove off.

No one was home in either house, but Total Control Security is planning to post footage online of the incident. It can be viewed online on our Facebook page.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Drumheller RCMP detachment at 403-823-7590.
