The Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre (CAPCC) celebrated the grand opening of its new location in Drumheller on Friday, July 16, and is hosting a Summer in the Plaza fun and interactive event to raise awareness and funds for our new location.
The Summer in the Plaza event will take place on July 22, at the Downtown Plaza. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the fun beginning at 6 p.m.
They invite residents to come out to enjoy an outdoor scavenger hunt while exploring the community, indulging in tasty food truck treats, and taking in the entertainment and family-friendly activities, all while learning about the services provided by Central Alberta Pregnancy Care.
There is also a silent auction fundraiser beginning July 16, through July 25, full of locally donated items.
The new centre will provide compassionate support and education to individuals and families impacted by an unexpected pregnancy and its effects. All CAPCC programs and services are free, confidential, and are offered in a safe and non-judgmental environment regardless of age, gender, race, or religion.
Women, men, and families are now able to access a variety of support services within the Drumheller community, such as pregnancy options, information, education on healthy relationships, support for past sexual abuse or trauma, community referrals, pregnancy-related grief support, baby and maternity clothing, and parenting education programs.
The Drumheller Pregnancy Care Centre can be reached at 403-334-9311 on Tuesdays & Thursdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The CAPCC also has a 24hr emergency helpline available to those who need support outside regular hours at 403-343-1619.

The Verdant Valley Ag Society is bringing back the Verdant Valley Draft Horse Competition.
The Society will be hosting its fourth event on Saturday, July 24, at the Verdant Valley Community Centre. The event proved to be popular, and after a hiatus in 2019, and then not staging the event during COVID, they are back.
“We’re hoping to get about a dozen competitors for the show,” said organizer Austin Veno. He says there are teams coming from all over Alberta. There may also be a few local teams.
These are teams of two horses, mostly Belgian, Percherons, Thoroughbred crosses, and Clydesdales.
The competition puts the horse teams and drivers through a gamut of activities to demonstrate their skills, emulating common chores.
“There will be a log pull and a wagon event. You have to back into a loading dock and parallel park. They are going to pull a log through a serpentine pylon course,” he said. It will be pretty similar to previous years.”
The Verdant Valley Community Centre is about 15 kilometres east of Drumheller on Highway 576. Gates will open at 11 a.m., with a concession and kids activities on site. The chore horse competition begins at noon.

Village of Delia searching for new CAO

The Village of Delia is looking for a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) following the resignation of former CAO, Tracy Breese.
Breese was hired into the role in April 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic; her last day in office was Wednesday, June 30.
“We are presently advertising for a new CAO,” says Delia Mayor David Sisley.
The village appointed Bill Wulff of Drumheller as interim CAO on Wednesday, July 7. He will remain the interim CAO until the role can be filled permanently.
Wulff is the former manager of finance and information systems for the Town of Drumheller, and a local accountant. He has volunteered his time and services to help seniors and low-income residents prepare tax returns, and was awarded the Alberta Seniors and Housing Minister’s Senior Service Award in 2018.
Mr. Wulff is also in charge of the Town of Drumheller’s annual Canada Day fireworks display.
Despite losing their CAO, Mayor Sisley says the village should not be affected “too badly” and says they will be able to “keep the village running.”
The regular July council meeting was cancelled in light of Breese’s resignation, and office hours have been reduced to Mondays in July.
