New Delia CAO resigns

The Village of Delia has once again been put into a position to find a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) following the resignation of Rudolf Liebenberg.
Delia struggled to find a replacement for the position after former CAO Tracy Breese resigned in June 2021.
“It has been a struggle, as it is for most small villages,” Delia Mayor David Sisley says.
Bill Wulff of Drumheller was appointed as interim acting CAO and acted in the position between June 2021 and February 2022 when Mr. Libenberg took over the role.
Mr. Wulff is the former Finance and Information Systems manager for the Town of Drumheller and a local accountant in Drumheller who has volunteered to help seniors and low-income residents prepare their tax returns.
Mr. Liebenberg’s last day in office was Tuesday, April 19, and Mayor Sisley says Mr. Wulff has once again stepped in to help the village as the search begins once again for a new CAO.

CBAC ends season at Stettler meet

The Canadian Badlands Aquatic Club wrapped up its season with a great result at a Stettler Swim Meet.
Coach Morgan Syvertson said it was the perfect end to a season after missing out last year due to COVID. The Stettler Swim Meet hosted swimmers from the Stettler Tsunamis, the Rocky Barracuda Swim Club, and the Sylvan Lake Nauticals Swim Club on April 24.
“It was a Swim Alberta sanctioned meet, and there were four clubs there which was really nice,” said Syvertsen. “Right off the bat, in the first event, one of our kids won, and that set the pace for almost the whole meet.”
“They didn’t win everything, but they won enough that it was really reading for the little band of coaches watching.”
What made the meet special is the whole club was on hand. Syvertsen explains, typically the heats are divided into junior circuit meets for the younger swimmers, and then regular circuit meets for the older kids. This meet included all the swimmers.
“We had our six-year-olds swimming, and also our 17-year-olds swimming, which was really nice… especially when you all get together like this, and everyone is cheering and screaming,” said Syvertsen.
The team had strong registration this season, with about 32 swimmers. Looking forward to the coming season, with a few coaches heading back to University, they are working on recruiting a few new coaches for the coming season.
“It was a really good year, a lot of our older swimmers made really good improvements,” said Syvertsen.

Family appalled at grave vandalism

A Trochu woman is upset after seeing her mother-in-law’s grave in Rumsey vandalized.
Audrey Nelson told the Mail she and her husband were made aware of the destruction that occurred on May 3 by someone who was working on headstones at the Rumsey Cemetery.
She explains her mother-in-law Lizzie Nelson passed away in 2014 at the age of 97. Her remains were kept in a small glass curling stone vessel.
“Someone had given it to her years ago and I think it had wine or whisky in it or something… and she wanted her ashes in it,” explains Nelson.
The curling stone was encased in an approximately one-foot square granite box with plexiglass to protect it from the weather, it was secured to the slab of granite where their grandfather was buried.
“They have ripped the granite box off the slab and smashed the curling rock, and her ashes were strewn,” said Nelson.
She says it must have happened very recently to when it was discovered because the ashes had not blown in the heavy winds last week.
“I would like people to know and maybe whoever did it will have remorse,” said Nelson.
She said it appeared nothing else in the cemetery seemed to be disturbed, and she speculates maybe someone thought there was something of monetary value in the box, like jewellery.

They have reported the incident to the police and hope it can be resolved.

“We are appalled and angry over such a terrible destruction of our precious mother’s remains,” said Nelson.
