Update: RCMP investigate suspicious death

   Update 3 p.m. April 28:

At about 4:45 a.m.  Drumheller RCMP were requested by EMS to attend a residence in Drumheller. Investigation confirmed the death of a 35-year-old male.  An autopsy has been ordered and is expected to be performed in Calgary on April 29.

Police are not releasing names, pending notification of next of kin, and are continuing to investigate. No charges have been laid.

According to a witness, a man in his mid-20s died from stab wounds sometime overnight Sunday at a residence along Newcastle Trail in west Drumheller.

A man who was staying in the house told the Mail, he came back to the residence at 8 p.m. Sunday evening, and did hear voices in the living room, but then fell asleep. He said he woke up at 5 a.m. and saw the police lights outside the residence. He was asked to provide RCMP with a statement during the incident.

The residence is owned by 97 year old Ross Doner, a long time resident of the valley.
According to the witness staying at the house, the man had only recently arrived at the house and the owner had driven to pick him up. The witness said he knew the man as Hong Lee, but also used the name of "Brian".
An RCMP tracking dog and handler arrived at the scene at 7 a.m. to aid in the investigation, presumably to search for the weapon.
RCMP Corporal Kevin Charles briefly spoke to the Mail, and would only say they were investigating a suspicious death.

90 year old woman dies in Morrin Corner Collison

At 9:57 pm on Sunday April 27th, 2014, Emergency Services responded to a collision at the intersection of Highways 9, 56, and 27, known as Morrin Corner.  Police investigation revealed a Buick car was westbound on Highway 9 and stopped at the intersection's stop sign prior to turning south towards Drumheller.  A Ford pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 27 and failed to stop at the stop sign.  The pickup collided with the passenger side of the car, sending both vehicles sliding through the intersection.  The 90 year old female passenger of the car sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Her 62 year old son, the driver of the car, sustained non life threatening injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Drumheller Health Centre.  Both of these occupants were from Hussar.  The driver of the pickup truck, a 39 year old male, as well as the occupants, an adult female and two children, were all transported to Drumheller Health Centre with non life threatening injuries.  They were from the Coronation area.  Drumheller RCMP are continuing their investigation and charges are pending against the driver of the pickup truck.  No names are being released.

Council sets 2014 mill rate

Town of Drumheller residential taxpayers may receive a slight drop in the Municipal portion of their taxes this year.
Town Council approved the 2014 Mill Rate at their regular meeting of April 22, 2014.
The residential mill rate for the Town is 10.19 per cent this year, down from 10.3317 in 2013.
That means on a home with an assessed value of $175,000, the tax bill will be $1,783.25.
Acting Corporate Services Director Bill Wulff said about  46 per cent of residential and non-residential ratepayers for  municipal taxes, district foundation taxes and education taxes, have a decrease of up to three per cent.
The municipal portion of the tax bill is set at 7.1940, down from the 2013 rate of 7.2268.
The school portion for residential tax bills is also down, from 2.7096 in 2013 to 2.5564  this year.
The Seniors Foundation portion of Drumheller tax bills, both residential and commercial, is up slightly, from 0.3953 to a rate of 0.4396.
Commercial ratepayers receive a drop in their school taxes to 3.7106 from 3.8132 last year.
The Municipal portion of the mill rate rises from 2013’s 11.5074 to 11.7695.
Total commercial taxes for 2014 add up to 15.9197, versus 15.7159 from 2013.
Taxes are based on the assessed property value from 2013, so if property is worth less than in 2012, then a property owner’s taxes will go down.
Bill Wulff said the 2014 property tax bills will be going out “forthwith.”
Taxes and municipal services can not be appealed to the Town, however, residents can  appeal their assessment.
