Open house Saturday to mark Fire Prevention Week

DSC 6891

This week is Fire Prevention Week, a time for the community to show support for the men and women who risk their lives for the safety of our community.
The annual event, this year runs from October 9-15. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait Check the Date!”  This is to remind Albertans to replace their smoke alarms every 10 years.
“Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Quite simply, because smoke alarms are your best tool for safety in your home but they are taken for granted,” said acting Fire Commissioner Spence Sample. “Research shows us that a properly installed and working smoke alarm can cut the chances of dying in a fire in half.  Yet we know that too many homes in Alberta do not have this life-saving device and in too many homes they have been disabled.”
To mark Fire Prevention Week, Firefighters in the area will be promoting their message of safety. last Sunday, October 9, the Munson Fire Department hosted its annual breakfast at the new Munson Hall and saw about 190 come through for the event.
The Drumheller Fire Department, comprised of halls in central Drumheller as well as Rosedale and East Coulee, are hosting an open house this Saturday, October 15, at the Drumheller Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This annual barbecue is done in concert with Emergency services.

Former Premier of Alberta, Jim Prentice, perished in an airplane crash in B.C. Thursday night.

Four people died in a crash just outside of Kelowna. The twin-engine Cessna was en route to Springbank airport. The Transportation Safety Board described the crash as “unsurvivable.”

Passionate about politics, Prentice was through Drumheller and visited the offices of The Drumheller Mail on a couple occasions, when running for the leadership of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party and also running in the 2015 provincial election.

While he had made a career in law and politics as an MP serving as a cabinet minister under Stephen Harper before becoming an MLA and Premier, he would talk excitedly about his mining roots.  His father was a miner, and Prentice, as a student, would return to the Crowsnest Pass during the summer and work in the mines.

Prentice was 60-years-old.

Public hearing Monday for Rosedale development

A public hearing at Town Hall Monday, October 17 may  pave the way for possible development in Rosedale. Town Council will be holding a public hearing at 4:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed development of the former golf course in Rosedale.
In August, Town Council held the first reading of the proposed bylaw amendment as part of the process to change land use. The application is to redesignate the site to a residential cottage district.
This is in accordance with the process that needs to be followed before Council can make a final decision for any changes to a Land Use Bylaw.
According to the Town of Drumheller’s web page, a Land Use Bylaw Amendment may include changing the text of the Land Use Bylaw to allow for a specific land use or development to occur. The Land Use Bylaw contains highly detailed rules, used by Development Officers to guide land uses and development that occurs on specific sites.
The process to make these changes requires readings by council and a public hearing. The public hearing gives local residents a chance to voice their concerns or support of this development. The public hearing must be advertised for two weeks prior to the hearing to give residents the chance to attend the meeting.
The development being discussed that is being brought before Council by property owner, RA Hamilton and Associates. The proposal includes a plan to develop 64 lots for RV and tenting. They also hope to incorporate a common area for use of instructors to conduct courses on things like beekeeping, hunting, butchering, and hobbies that promote a self sufficient lifestyle.
