Agrihood project in the works for Rockyford

rockyford cropped

Rockyford may have some new neighbours who are interested in forming an “Agrihood.”
A group called The Agrihood Project recently held a town hall meeting in the community on their vision of a sustainable community on the former Rockyford School site.
“It is a possibility, and it is moving along, so we are definitely hopeful,” said Anaya Lea, one of the project’s founders.
At its core, the Agrihood is a housing development for up to 24 sites built around a farm where residents of the community will contribute their labour and skill to make “farm to table” living a reality. The site would utilize the school for a sustainability centre to share knowledge.
“The focus of our project is sustainable living and we would be using it initially for temporary housing for those of us who would move out there first, but also for running courses and workshops about sustainable topics,” said Lea.
On the site, there will also be the garden area, a greenhouse for year-round agriculture and a market and community space. It is all to be set on the 4.39-acre site.
“We want to be an integrated part of the community so we are looking at the project as not only our community, but the community as a whole,” she said.
The site is currently the property of Golden Hills School Division. The Agrihood project wishes to work with the Village on acquiring the site. So far, the Village has not secured the site, but Lea says they have expressed interest to the school division for the property.
“We’ve been working with the Village all along. We think that’s advantageous because they have a vested interest in what goes on the property,” she said. “On November 2 we did a town hall meeting where we presented the project to residents for the first time and had a good turnout there and a positive response about the concept of the project. A lot of these people are farmers and business people, so they understand what it takes to put something like this together.”
Their next step is to develop a more detailed business plan.
“Obviously, we don’t want to do it if we aren’t going to be fairly certain of succeeding,” said Lea. “It is looking promising with our discussions.”

Dvss to present musical production of “All Shook Up!”

IMG 0591

Eighteen DVSS students in grades 10-12 are members of the cast who have been working extremely hard in preparation for a major musical production directed by Becky Neuman with assistance from Lisa Marie Macdonald, both of whom currently teach the choir at DVSS. Along with them are a  number of other students who are helping to prepare the set, and will work behind the scenes to make the show possible.  This production is sponsored by Kaleidoscope Theatre and is part of their season programming.  This is the first time in a number of years that the high school has teamed up with the community theatre to present a major production.  The students are able to get credits for their commitment, or gather volunteer hours.  They are also excited about the prospect of performing in a large production.  Some of the students have some experience in performing in the past in choir or drama or private voice lessons, or a combination, but for many, this is their first big show.  On a personal note, the director, Becky Neuman is very impressed at how hard these students are working to bring this show to life, even though many of them have no singing experience or musical background.
“ALL SHOOK UP!” was written by Joe Dipietro, and was inspired by and features the songs of Elvis Presley. It takes place in 1955, somewhere in middle America, where one girl’s dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. Among the 24 songs featured in the score are classics like “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and of course the title tune, “ALL SHOOK UP!”
The show runs November 29 through December 4.  All performances start at 7:30 in the Kaleidoscope Theatre.  Tickets are very reasonably priced and should be purchased in advance. You can order tickets by going on the Kaleidoscope Theatre website or by phoning 823-PLAY(7529). Please come out and support this awesome production.  We promise you will have a great time.

Open House slated for Rowley Solar Farm

SOlar

Another alternative energy project is being rolled out in the area.
Kronos Solar Projects is holding an Open House on Thursday, November 24 for a proposed solar farm near the community of Rowley.
“The aim of the consultation is to provide information to the public about the proposal, and obtain their input on the scheme,” states a letter to residents from Makan Yarandi of Kronos.
The project, to be located on private lands southeast of the Hamlet, is proposed to be built on 20 hectares of land and have the capacity to generate 10 Megawatts that will feed into the grid. This is enough to provide electricity for 12,200 people.
According to an information package on the project the site has been selected because it is not designated for high agricultural use, it has very low ecological or visual impact and is a suitable location for connection to the grid.
According to information provided, construction for the farm will take about four months. The operation is to be in the area of 20-25 years and there will be very little disturbance to the land. There are no permanent installations and the entire infrastructure can be removed when its lifecycle is complete. The installations are noise and emission free, and very little vegetation is disturbed when installed.
It states that in case studies the biodiversity of the land increased and the site can continue to be used as grazing land.
Before the project goes forward, it will have to be approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission, where there are a number of steps with opportunities for public input.
The Open house is slated for 5-6:30 p.m. at the Rowley Community Hall on Thursday, November 24. Representatives of Kronos Solar will be on hand to provide information on the project.  Kronos is one of the leading developers of large-scale solar parks and operates on four continents.
