Snake of Alberta highlighted at Speaker Series

Zimmer April6

The April 6 session of the 2017 Royal Tyrrell Museum’s Speaker Series is a presentation by Jeff Zimmer, from the District Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch, entitled “Snakes of Alberta.”

Alberta is home to six native species of snakes. They include the venomous prairie rattlesnake, the bull snake (that can grow up to two metres long), and the western hog-nosed snake that rolls over and plays dead when frightened. Snakes are feared and misunderstood by most of the human population and this can lead to their persecution and destruction. All of Alberta’s snakes are protected by provincial law, but this still does not stop some people from intentionally killing them, turning them into pets, or selling live ones.

Officer Zimmer spent several years working in snake country in the southeast corner of the province both protecting snakes and dealing with snake issues. In his presentation, he will talk about identifying native snakes, how to prevent encounters, and protect native snake habitat. He will also provide tips on what to do if you’re bitten by a snake.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum’s Speaker Series talks are free and open to the public. They are held every Thursday until April 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the Museum auditorium. Past Speaker Series talks are also available on the Museum’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/user/RoyalTyrrellMuseum

Drumheller Curling Club planning for future

IMG 4643

Members of the Drumheller Curling club will get a glimpse of what the future might look like on Monday when it unveils some of the club’s potential plans.
The Drumheller Curling Club has been enjoying a resurgence with popular events throughout the season and a burgeoning junior program. It has also been hosting fun nights which has also brought in new users.
The club has also been busy looking at the possibility of replacing the facility beside the Drumheller Memorial Arena.  Lorelei Martin has been working on a committee for a new facility and says they will present a feasibility plan to the membership this coming Monday, April 10.
She explains the Club was able to receive a Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant to help fund the feasibility study. They contracted GEC to complete the report.
“We have had quite a lot of support from the town in the process,” said Martin. “They provided letters of support.”
She adds that because much of the background work had been completed by the town, they were able to realize some savings on the feasibility study.
The study looked at the possibility of either a four-rink or six-rink facility. The town has earmarked the area north of the Drumheller Memorial Arena for a new facility in close proximity to the ice plant that could serve both the arena and the curling facility. The potential costs for the plans will be shared with membership at large at the Monday night’s meeting.
“The town continues to work with us on the project,” said Martin. “It has been very positive with the new rink team.”
The club has been actively fundraising for the feasibility study as well as the potential project.
The meeting with curling club membership at large and GEC will be at 7 p.m. in the large meeting room at the Badlands Community Facility.
