Rotary Radio Auction grosses over $31k

The phones were lit up at this year’s Rotary Radio Auction as it enjoyed another successful event.
While they are still working on a final total, so far, the event grossed over $31,000.  Auction chair Brent Pedersen is very happy with the results.
“It is probably our biggest local fundraiser,” said Pedersen.
Some of the top items included a donation by Sublime Food and Wine of a personal chef service for six at your home. On day one of the auction it fetched $1,150 from John Kohut, while on the second night, the service went to Randy Pliva for $800.
Sports memorabilia and electronics were also popular items.
Pedersen said there was great support this year not only in Drumheller but also in the surrounding areas.
“A big thank you to Drumheller and area residents,” said Pedersen “We had very good coverage, the phones were just a hopping right through. So it seemed like we were getting more action on the call-ins.”
The funds from the Radio auction have not been earmarked for any particular project at this time, however, it will all be used locally for projects that benefit the young, seniors and disadvantaged through the good work that the Rotary does.

The Dragons had a busy week and managed to snag four of a possible six points.
The Dragons started the week off in Calgary on Tuesday, October 10 to take on the Canucks.
Calgary opened the scoring less than a minute and a half in on the powerplay, but Joren Patenaude evened it up by midway through the period. Calgary took a 2-1 lead to end the first. Markus Boguslavsky tied it up 16 minutes into the second period on the powerplay, but Calgary added another goal a minute later to make it 3-2The Canucks added one more in the third to make the final 4-2 Calgary.
They were undeterred on their trip to Sherwood Park on Friday, October 13 to take on the Crusaders. It took until 14 minutes into the second period for Boguslavsky to open the scoring on the powerplay.  Brady Risk added a goal 40 seconds into the third period, and Boguslavsky added another powerplay goal in the third for the 3-0 shutout win. Dane Dow stopped 23 shots.
“Our goalies give us a chance to win every game and when you have that, you can’t complain,” said forward Tyler Kreklewich. “It gives the players confidence.”
On Sunday afternoon, the Dragons didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard at home versus Camrose.  Andrew Kartusch scored just nine seconds into the game to put the Dragons up 1-0. The teams traded goals through the first, with Dragons on top 3-2 with two goals from Kreklewich.
In the second period, the Kodiaks evened it up four minutes in, but two minutes later Boguslavsky put the Dragons up 4-3. Dawson Bruneski scored on the empty net with 55 seconds left in the third period for the Dragons 5-3 win.
Kreklewich, who had two goals credits the team for his success Sunday afternoon.
“When you play with good players, they help you succeed and that is exactly what Taupert and Boguslavsky did, so it was a good game for everyone,” said Kreklewich.
The Dragons keep building on their strong start and are holding on to the second spot in the AJHL Viterra South with a 9-3-1 record.
“We’re moving the puck well this year, and we are a close team, so that helps a lot. So moving forward that is going to be a big thing for us,” said Kreklewich.
The Dragons head way up north this week with games in Drayton Valley, Grande Prairie, and Whitecourt.

Windstorm keeps responders busy

Wildfire Evacs and Windstorm

Windstorms throughout Southern Alberta had emergency crews busy on Tuesday night, as it caused damage and exacerbated fires.

The Drumheller Fire Department was busy with a grass fire in Rosedale. They received the call at about 3 in the afternoon.

While they appeared to get a handle on it, it spread to the bushes, making it tricky to fight.

“It got into the bush, and then the wind it kept spreading further and further,” said Fire Chief Bruce Wade.

Wade explains the fire was accidental. Last week a resident was burning and the fire smoldered underground until the wind reignited it.

The department deployed pumpers from Drumheller and the Rosedale Hall, as well as its bush buggy and about 3,000 feet of hose. Wade called the Dalum Fire department to help.  They were on site about 8:30 p.m.

Because of another call of a rollover Tuesday evening, the departments asked for Munson for support to look after the town as resources we being stretched.

In town the wind caused damage to trees, signs and power poles. One demonstration of its power was north of town near Huxley where a train derailed.

The Three Hills RCMP responded to the derailment at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, October 17.  There, 28 rail cars carrying 56 Sea Cans were blown from the track. There were no injuries and no hazardous material was spilled. As a precaution, several rural residences in close proximity of the derailment were evacuated for about three hours. CN crews have removed the Sea Cans.

The winds also exacerbated fires in the nearby areas.  Gleichen was evacuated as a fire in Siksika and Wheatland County threatened the community. Evacuation centres were set up in Strathmore and Standard.
