Trial dates have been set for a man accused in a historic sexual assault case from his time at Prairie Bible College in Three Hills.
In March of this year, Derek Taplin was apprehended by Winnipeg Police on a Canada-wide warrant and charged with four counts of sexual exploitation of a young person, four counts of sexual interference, four counts of sexual assault and four counts of invitation to sexual touching.

Standard chooses realtor for subdivision lot sales

Standard Village of

Standard village council approved a motion to move forward with one of three realtors to assist in selling empty lots in its new subdivision during the regular Wednesday, October 11 council meeting.
Council members heard from administration that each of the three realtors had provided different commission rates, and administration also noted each of the three realtors also had varying sales and marketing strategies.
It was noted the lots were assessed under $50,000, though the value of each varied due to sizing of the individual parcels. Administration explained a previous council motion had set the recommended price at $25,000; however, in order to sell the lots for below the assessed value council would need to hold a public hearing for each lot sold.
Administration recommended to rescind the previous motion and impose at least a $50,000 sales price per lot. This would save time for all those involved, including the buyer, council, and administration.
A total of three real estate agencies had submitted quotes for the sale of these properties, and council discussed at length which of the three quotes would have the best results for the best cost. It was explained, although the sale of these properties would not have any cost to the municipality, a commission fee would be deducted from the revenue.
Council passed a motion in favour of entering into a six month contract with Remax Central, based in Calgary, for the sale of all lots, with the possibility of an additional six month contract extension. Administration explained Remax would use its marketing strategies and commission on each lot would range between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on whether a partner site was utilized.

Man sentenced for drug trafficking

Courthouse

A Drumheller man was given a conditional sentence order after pleading guilty to trafficking in cocaine.
Richard Nath appeared in the Alberta Court of Justice in Drumheller on Friday, October 13, to make his plea.
The court heard how in November of 2022, RCMP had received information that Nath may have been trafficking in drugs and began surveillance. Police undertook an undercover operation, and on May 3, 2023, arranged a purchase through texting. They received a small amount of crack from an unknown female.
On May 11, an undercover officer arranged a second purchase. This time, they received 3.5 grams of crack cocaine directly from Nath.
A short time later, RCMP made a traffic stop of a Dodge Caravan and arrested Nath and his spouse Erica Devoe, who were in the vehicle.
Police seized 11.6 grams of crack cocaine, as well as $330 in a purse, including the buy money.
The federal crown alleged a short, dated and unrelated criminal record and did note an aggravating factor was the investigation showed this was not a one-off, but an operation of a commercial scale.
A mitigating factor considered was that it was an early guilty plea.
Defence for Nath noted that Nath was injured in a vehicle crash a couple of years prior and had medical issues stemming from the collision. He has been unemployed since the accident.
The pain from his injuries caused him to relapse, and he began selling drugs as a way to maintain his addiction. All of this happened behind his wife's back, and he has been accepted into a treatment facility.
Nath was sentenced to an 18-month conditional sentence order and is to complete 60 hours of community service.
Charges against Erica Devoe were withdrawn.
