The Dragons split their first weekend of the regular season on a road trip north to play the Bonnyville Pontiacs and the Lloydminster Bobcats.
The Dragons were in Bonnyville on Friday, September 15, to open the season versus the Pontiacs. Drumheller had the jump and was up two goals before the midpoint of the first period, coming from Coy Pighin and Cyle Clayton. The Pontiacs added one but the Dragons were up 3-1 by the end of the first period when Ryan Henderson added one more.
The second period was back and forth until Pighin put one in for the Dragons with 1:11 left in the period. He finished his hat trick in the third period and took the Dragons along for a 5-1 win.
On Saturday, September 16, the Dragons were in Lloydminster to take on the Bobcats. Henderson opened the scoring 1:10 in, but the Bobcats answered back with two. Jacob Goudreau added one at the midway point and Pighin added another with six minutes left in the period, but the Bobcats also added two and led 4-3 after one. Adam Raesler tied the game in the second and put the Dragons up a minute into the third, but Lloydminster added three more to go on to a 7-5 win. Dragons outshot the Bobcats 48-30.
The Dragons were in Blackfalds on Tuesday, September 19, but results were not available at press time. Their season home opener is this Friday, September 22, when they take on the Whitecourt Wolverines and on Saturday, September 23, they host the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
