Hip-Hop for a Cure joins cancer fight

Some young hip-hop artists from Drumheller and beyond put together their MC skills to raise funds to fight cancer.
The first annual Hip-Hop for a Cure event went on March 25 at Neighbours Pub in Drumheller. Local artists such as J McLean and Limitlis MC were joined by other hip-hop artists from across the province for the benefit concert.
Thomas Schow, who also goes by Apollo XCII said they have been working on the event for a few months.
“My dad passed away from cancer when I was 17, so when we finally got to the stage of wanting to do an event, we wanted to do something that gave back to the community,” he said. “We wanted to do something cool and that was my first choice for a charity.”
When all was said and done, they were able to raise just over $500 and presented it to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation for the local cancer unit.
The event also showcased a growing hip-hop community. Schow explains there is a number of local MCs who have been honing their craft, and Drumheller is also becoming a popular venue for out of town artists.
“We are growing as a place for artists from Alberta to come to,” he said.
He says there is strong support to make this an annual event. “We’ll see how much bigger and better we can get next year,” he said.

Come April 9, the Royal Canadian Legion in Drumheller will be taking a moment to mark the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
This year Canada is celebrating the centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.  From April 9-12, 1917, the Canadian Corps battled three divisions of the German Sixth Army. Canada lost more than 3,500 soldiers when they took firm control of the Ridge.
In the years that followed, it has been recognized as more than a battle, but as a significant moment as Canada came of age as a nation.
On April 9, a centennial celebration is taking place at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France and students from Drumheller will be there to mark the day
In Drumheller, the Legion is marking the centennial on Sunday, April 9 at the Drumheller Cenotaph and they are inviting the community to join them on this historic occasion at 1 p.m.

Dickson Dam operators release water

Operators of the Dickson Dam have begun to release water into the Red Deer River.

After carefully watching the river levels, the Dickson Dam has decided to release a controlled amount of water.

The release is to make room in the reservoir in anticipation of spring runoff.

Residents will notice a slight increase in water levels over the weekend due to this increase.

“It’s not significant where people are going to be concerned or anything,” said Mayor Terry Yemen.

The dam itself was constructed and opened in 1983, creating the reservoir known to most as Glennifer Lake near Innisfail.
