Business Excellence Awards 2018 Finalists Announced

The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2018 Business Excellence Awards:
· Arts, Culture & Community Award: A.M.R Dance, Boston Pizza and Salvation Army;
· Diversity Leadership Award: Boston Pizza, Sandstone Lanes Bowling Alley, and Shoppers Drug Mart;
· Most Promising New Business: Badlands Elder Care, Hoodoo Voodoo Cycle & Motorsports, and Maddy’s Chicken;
· Small Business of the Year: A.M.R Dance, Athens Greek Restaurant, and The Faux Den;
· Large Business of the Year: Boston Pizza, Chinook Financial, and Western Financial;
· Business Professional of the Year: Barb Lubinski (Western GM), Jason Blanke (99.5 Drum FM) and Trevor Gough (Ascend Financial).

A total of 29 nominations were received for the awards this year. The online “Fan Voting”, which was first added to the awards selection process in 2016, was available to the public again this year from Tuesday, April 17 to Tuesday, April 24 and received a record 1,592 votes. These votes were combined with scores given by the Business Excellence Awards Committee, to determine the top three finalists in each category.
In previous years, winners of the Business Excellence Awards were announced at a gala hosted by the Chamber during Small Business Week. This year, the Chamber is joining forces with the Town of Drumheller and Drumheller Rotary Club to present awards from all three organizations for one great big evening of recognition and cheer at the Celebration of Excellence.
It will take place Friday, June 15 at the Badlands Community Facility, and will honor individuals, businesses, and groups for their achievements and contributions to our community. Together the group will present a total of twelve awards.
Tickets to the Celebration of Excellence can be purchased at the Chamber, Town Hall, Centre Street Insurance or SJ Fashions. The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, June 1. In addition, sponsorship opportunities for the event are still available to businesses that wish to support the event and gain valuable exposure.


Climbing for a cause

Four members of the Drumheller Fire Department alongside 393 other firefighters participated in the 3rd annual Firefighter Stair Climb Challenge in Calgary on Sunday, April 29. The quad climbed 1204 steps to raise awareness and funds for the Firefighters Assistance Charitable Society (FACS). Duane Bolin had a time of 19:47, Zayna Chomas had a time of 26:55, Merv Smith had a time of 17:38 and Ken Vereschagin had a time of 21:51.

MS Walk goes Sunday

    This Sunday, members of the community whose lives have been touched by Multiple Sclerosis will be out in force to raise awareness and funds to help those who suffer from the debilitating condition.
    The Jayman Built MS Walk goes this Sunday, May 6, at the Badlands Community Facility. Already there are 14 teams and 65 walkers registered for the annual event. This is a great community event that has the aim of improving the lives of those with MS.
    The funds from the MS walk go towards research as well as to fund programs that support those with MS locally.
 Check-in starts at 9 a.m. and the start time is at 10 a.m. There are two route lengths; 2 km and 5 km, for walkers to choose from. both offer a great Sunday morning walk.
    The online goal of the event is to raise $33,350, and so far there has been $5,250 logged. The leading team is the In Memory of Frank Laslo team, which always has a strong presence at the walk.  It has already raised about $1,600 alone.
