The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce (DDCC) has received the 2017 Chamber of the Year Award from the provincial chambers of commerce organization.

The DDCC was selected for a variety of achievements in 2017 including the Business Advocacy Committee’s success in advocating for a shop local component in the Town’s Purchasing Policy, the addition of the Lunch & Learn program, and a second summer operating a mobile Visitor Information Centre at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The chamber previously received the award in 2013.

Staff members Marley Henneigh and Heather Bitz accepted the award at Alberta Chambers of Commerce’s provincial conference on May 24-26 in Grande Prairie.

“It is a great honour to be recognized amongst our fellow Chambers of Commerce for our efforts in the business community, and we thank all our board of directors, staff, and members that contribute to our success over the past year,” said DDCC executive director Heather Bitz.

Drumheller received the award for the 151-350 membership category. Fellow recipients in different categories included St. Paul, Lloydminister, and Red Deer.

Outdoor Pool opening delayed

20180528 Outdoor Pool TJH 0005

Town of Drumheller crews have been working hard this week to get the outdoor pool open. However, the inspection and maintenance program, which takes place prior to seasonal operation, has identified at least one leak in one of the pipes.
The crews are now working on exposing the leaking pipe and checking for other leaks. Once all the leaking spots have been identified and the pipes repaired, the pool will then be filled and tested ready to open up to the public.
“We recognize the inconvenience that the delay in the outdoor pool will cause and we want to apologize for the delay,” outlined Armia Mikhaeil Director of Infrastructure. “Crews are working hard to fix the issues and we hope get the pool open as soon as possible for everyone to enjoy”.
“In addition, tests carried out for the preparation to get the fountain operational showed that there is a significant amount of water loss occurring,” added Julia Fielding, Economic Development and Communications Officer for the Town of Drumheller. “This indicates one or several leaking points and so crews are currently working with an engineering firm to come up with a solution. Unfortunately, it may be the fountain will not be operational this summer.”

Fire Bans go Mobile

The Government of Alberta has stepped into the 21st Century by introducing a comprehensive, easy to use app that will give Albertans on-demand information about fire bans across the province.
The new app called Alberta Fire Bans, available for Android and Apple devices, will give people mobile access to see where there are fire bans, restrictions and advisories to help plan their camping and recreational experiences as well as activity at home.
Springtime can have a high wildfire danger rating because dry grass and leaves can provide fuel before new growth begins. Fire bans also occur throughout the warmer summer months depending on weather and moisture conditions. It’s always wise to check for Alberta fire bans before you enjoy the outdoors.

The app features a bottom banner that shows the number of full fire bans, restrictions, and advisories with corresponding colours for easy navigation as well as interchangeable map and satellite view.
As of May 16, there were 93 fire bans and fire advisories across the province.
For more information on this new technology, visit AlbertaFireBans.ca. If you see a wildfire you can report it at 310-FIRE (3473).
