MS Walk heads out Sunday

On Sunday, dozens of Drumhellerites will be walking their way to a better life for those suffering with Multiple Sclerosis.    The Jayman Built MS Walk is this Sunday, May 3, and organizers are looking forward to a strong turnout.
“We have 178 registered right now and we’re really happy with that. I’m sure we’ll have more come out on the day of the walk and we might even hit 200,” said MS walk coordinator, Jennifer Pasiciel.

The MS Walk is a tradition in the valley for a beautiful spring walk. The walk is entering its 16th year in Drumheller and it has raised thousands for the MS Society.  It dedicates funds to services and programs, research and public awareness. The funds are also used to support and train at the local chapter level.     Registration on walk day opens at 9 a.m. at the Badlands Community Facility (BCF), and the walk takes off at 10 a.m.

The route has remained the same. There is a four-kilometre loop from the BCF to the Homestead Museum and back. There is also the six-kilometre route along Riverside Drive to the DVSS and returning to the BCF. This year organizers have also added a one-kilometre route so even more can participate.

They have a full morning planned. There is a cold breakfast on site before heading out on the route. There is also kids entertainment including a face painter. Walkers returning can fuel up with a barbecue provided by Freson Bros.

Pasiciel says the walk enjoys tremendous community support. They have received over $2,500 worth of merchandise they have dedicated to a silent auction, which will be set up at the BCF.

“All the money from the auction will go to the MS Society,” she said.

Organizers invite the community to the event. Those wishing to walk can register on site. Those not walking can still come down to enjoy entertainment or support the silent auction.
