Coinciding with Carbon’s Centennial celebrations, from August 9 to 12, and the 65th anniversary of the Carbon Lions Club, the Village of Carbon and the Lions have come together to create a Centennial Park.
Still an ongoing work in progress, the park will have its grand opening during the centennial weekend. It will feature personalized bricks, which were sold as a fundraiser prior to construction, and when the park is finished it will offer walking trails, a natural amphitheater, and used for outdoor events in the summer. It can also be used for kids to toboggan on during winter, and historical points throughout the space will be part of the project said Deb Grosfield, Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Carbon.
“We are hoping the historical markers will showcase everything that created Carbon, and will add an educational value to the visit,” said Grosfield.
The park was made possible through the Village of Carbon and the Carbon Lions Club partnering up, and $125,000 was received from the Canadian government through the Legacy Fund.
“We are hoping one day that it will be a tourist attraction, showing off the Carbon coal footprint,” said Grosfield.
The project is set to be completed by fall of 2012.
