This weekend’s cool wet forecast has farmers praying that mother nature delivers some moisture this weekend. A hot dry spring has many farmers including myself concerned how long crops can hang on before starting to go show effects of this springs drought. Currently the spring seeded cereal grains have been fairing well under the dry conditions, however crops such as canola have not been so fortunate. The combination of dry conditions and 2 killing frosts has many farmers watching their canola crops closely. Due to the drier than normal seeding conditions Canola which is typically a shallow seeded grain has been struggling to germinate and the fields that may have been fortunate enough to germinate have been touched frost forcing some in the area to get the seeder back out and make reseeding plans. On a positive note the early spring has provided enough time to get back into the fields an reseed without too much concern about fall frosts affecting the growing season. The next couple weeks will be critical for this years crop crop development so don’t be surprised if you see more that a couple farmers standing in the rain with a smile on their face if this weekend turns out to be wet. Gary Chambers
